Inventory
Inventory is a management system. Your homebase can have unlimited storage, but what you take with you is limited.
There are two models. You can pick for your game. Modern games typically lean towards the Zone model. Fantasy can use both, but tends towards a more bag style system. But feel free to mix and match for your game. We also present you with a hybrid solution.
The Combat Rule
Using any item takes 1 Action. Whether it is scanning with Ocular HUDs, drinking a potion from a pouch, or pulling a tool from a backpack, it consumes your action for the turn.
Bagged Inventory
With bagged inventory you carry your gear in your bags, or your hands and armor on your body. If you don't have slots in your bags you can't bring it with you or pick it up unless you hold it. This does not mean you can't use them in one action, only that your slots are generic and that you can only hold so much of so many kinds of things.
| Container | Contains |
|---|---|
| Belt Pouch | Level + 2 small items |
| Backpack | Level * 2 medium items |
| Resource Bag | Level + 2 resources |
| Item Size | Small | Medium | Large | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small | 1 | 2 | 4 | Small items are things like scrolls, keys, dice, potions |
| Medium | — | 1 | 2 | Medium items are what most things are |
| Large | — | — | 1 | Large items are either heavy or large, like a great sword or shield or plate armor |
| Resource Type | Stack Size | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|
| Fiber | 50 | Lightweight, highly compressible. |
| Liquid/Plants | 20 | Delicate; requires vials or careful bundling. |
| Wood | 10 | Bulky and rigid; hard to fit many in a bag. |
| Ore | 10 | Very dense/heavy (abstracted as bulk). |
| Creature Parts | 5 (small) | Often unique shapes (horns, hearts, claws). |
| Creature Parts | 1 (large) | Often unique shapes (essense). |
With a Bagged Inventory at Character creation you can have the same starting gear as in the character creation section (Tier 1 weapon, armor and a special item) and you have 1 Tier 1 belt pouch, 1 Tier 3 Backpack and 1 Tier 1 Resource bag.
Zone System
In the Zone system your inventory goes in a very specific slot on your body and it must fit form factor. You can't put gloves on your feet, or a dagger on your eyes. Things must be appropriate for the slot.
Some items may be containers and should follow the containers rule.
Zone 1: The Senses (Head & Neck) These slots are for items that filter the world or provide constant data.
- Cranium (Head): Hats, helmets, or neural interfaces.
- Ocular (Eyes): Glasses, contacts, or HUD-enabled lenses.
- Auditory (Ears): Earbuds, comms pieces, or dampeners.
- Olfactory/Respiration (Face): Masks, filters, or specialized scents.
- Cervical (Neck): Scarves, necklaces, or protective collars.
- Oral (Mouth): Lozenges, gum, or voice modulators.
- Somatic (Mental/Soul): Non-physical "slots" like active digital apps or ongoing spells.
Zone 2: The Core (Torso & Arms) This zone covers protection and utility that requires a "reach."
- Outer Layer (Chest): Jackets, hoodies, or tactical vests (Armor).
- Shoulders (Back): Slings, holsters, or (rarely) small satchels.
- Bracer (Left Wrist): Watches, ID bands, or wrist-mounted tech.
- Bracer (Right Wrist): Hidden blades, casting tools, or stabilizers.
- Digit (Left Hand): Rings or specialized gloves.
- Digit (Right Hand): Rings or specialized gloves.
- Under-layer (Inner Chest): Concealed pockets for passports or sensitive data.
Zone 3: The Pockets (Legs & Hips) The high-traffic storage area for frequently used items.
- Hip (Left): Keyrings, carabiners, or belt-clipped tools.
- Hip (Right): Phone holsters or primary weapons.
- Front Pocket (Left): Loose change, lighters, or small consumables.
- Front Pocket (Right): Primary tech/smartphone.
- Back Pocket (Left): Wallets or flat documents.
- Back Pocket (Right): Handheld scanners or secondary tools.
- Thigh/Cargo (Side): Larger items that don't fit in standard pockets.
Zone 4: The Foundation Items that anchor the character
- Ankle (Left): Hidden "last resort" items or backup knives.
- Ankle (Right): Trackers or additional storage wraps.
- Footwear: Sturdy boots or reinforced soles.
- The Courier Slot: A temporary slot for items currently being moved to "Home." Courier slots start at level 3. You can purchase bigger ones. The level dictates how many items can be stored in the courier slot.
Zone 5: Home Items that can be "sent back" to the base.
- The Digital Cloud: Data and logs stored on remote servers. Digital items collected in the field go into the cloud automatically.
- The Home Archive: The physical "Base" where bulk resources and trophies live.
At Character creation with a Zoned system a character may have up to 8 items with randomly generated levels using a 1d6 to generate the levels. They can go in any slot, but as a rule of thumb a user should have 1 peice of armor, 1 weapon of some kind. A character will also start with a Tier 3 Courier bag which allows them to carry 3 items home that is not digital.
Apps, dongles, keychain tools, tattoos count towards the 8 items a character can start with.
Hybrid.
You can combine the best of both systems. You can use the following areas as places to carry bags of inventory outside of the container rules the Zone system follows. This is just an explicit location for incorporating the Bagged System.
- Zone 2 Back can carry a Backpack or Resourse bag
- Zone 3 Hips can carry belt pouches
- Zone 4 Courier Slot can carry a belt pouch, backpack or resource bag.
Kits
Crafting, Theiving, Hunting, Trapping, Navigation, and other specialty tasks that have multiple tools can have a kit that contain all the tools necessary and only take up one slot.
Containers
Containers can contain things. They can contain up to their level of things. But the container itself only take up one slot.
A Bag of Holding, Portable Hole, or what I like to call a TARDIS container — "bigger on the inside" — has a 3 times their level max capacity and cannot contain other multi-dimensional containers.
Tattoos
In some worlds tattoos can be magical and should be included with the inventory as items to be used. Tattoos are considering Somatic in Zone 1.
Magical Tattoos can be found in the following zones of the body
- Sternum
- Over the Heart
- Shoulder (Left)
- Shoulder (Right)
- Arm Sleeve (Left)
- Arm Sleeve (Right)
- Thigh (Left)
- Thigh (Right)
- Calf (Left)
- Calf (Right)
- Back
- Shoulder Blade (Left)
- Shoulder Blade (Right)
- Neck
You can only have one tattoo in each of these locations.
Cybernetics
Cybernetics like Tattoos are allowed in some worlds. They should not be used in combination with magical tattoos. In otherwords you cannot have a cybernetic and a magical tattoo in the same location.
You can replace most items in your zones with cybernetics and cannot use that slot for anything else. The following slots are unavailable for cybernetics:
- Somatic
- Underlayer
- Courier Slot
- All Home Slots in Zone 5
